In mid-July a group of Ponaganset educators, Donald Reuker, Elizabeth Reichardt, Greg Coffey, Heather Wellington, Lisa Tvenstrup, and Mary Keable, embarked on a journey to Jinan, China to work in a two week, summer learning program in conjunction with Shandong Fundamental Education Group and Roosevelt International Academy.  The team from Rhode Island was charged with teaching project-based learning (PBL) courses with an aim of exposing both Chinese students and teachers to innovative teaching and learning methods used in the United States. The Ponaganset teachers taught a wide array of PBL courses in language, history, math, and science. The Chinese students thrived in an active, collaborative, hands-on educational model of instruction while the Chinese teachers observed, participated, and consulted with the American teachers to broaden their perspectives of what PBL is comprised of and its effects on student learning. The experience provided invaluable professional development and cultural exchange to both Chinese and American teachers. The collaboration between the East and West was deemed a great success resulting in each of the Ponaganset team being invited back to China in the summer of 2019!
