Ponaganset High School students are inviting all veterans and the public to join them in a Wreaths Across America wreath-placing ceremony at the school in Glocester on Tuesday, Dec. 11, from 9 to 11 a.m.

Wreaths Across America is an extension of the Arlington Wreath Project, which was started in 1992 by Morrill Worcester, who placed 5,000 holiday wreaths on veterans’ graves at Arlington National Cemetery to honor our deceased soldiers at Christmas.

Ponaganset High School was chosen as a ceremonial site in 2007 for their school program, which culminates a classroom educational unit on the American military veteran experience. Also, the school was the site of the recent multi-day appearance around Veterans Day of the Living Wall half-size replica of the Vietnam War Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C.

The Patriot Guard Riders, volunteers who stand as a line of honor and defense for military services, funerals and ceremonies, will escort the Walmart tractor-trailer truck carrying wreaths from the Worcester Wreath Co., in Maine, to Arlington. For more information, call Amy Ricketson at (401) 710-7500, ext. 3372. Also, learn more about the Wreaths Across America project at its online home, www.wreathsacrossamerica.org.

On Saturday, Dec. 15, at noon, Wreaths Across America will also be at the Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, in Exeter, to remember and honor our veterans through the laying of remembrance wreaths on the graves of our country’s fallen heroes and saying the name of each and every veteran aloud while doing so.

Visit the Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery’s website at bit.ly/2TTenHz for information on sponsoring one or more wreaths, or helping to place wreaths at the gravesites, by clicking the “Sponsor Wreaths” and “Volunteer” red buttons.
