Ponaganset High School’s Diploma (Graduation) Requirements

Our graduation requirements have evolved over the past several years. Currently we require 22 Carnegie units. The requirements for a Ponaganset High School Diploma involve multiple measures of student performance that includes the successful completion of Carnegie Units based on standards, schoolwide diploma assessments (portfolio, exhibition), common classroom assessments, and performance on the state assessment. Specifically, the Ponaganset Diploma System Graduation Requirements include:

  • successful completion of 22 Carnegie units both in total and for specific subjects;
  • a digital Graduation Portfolio system (required starting in 2007);
  • Graduation Exhibition (required starting in 2008);
  • legacy project that requires students to volunteer in the community;
  • performance on the state assessment (required starting in 2008); and
  • performance on classroom assessments that include, but not limited to, presentations, common tasks, end-of-course exams, classroom project / assignments..

Each of these assessments is guided by our graduation requirements which were specifically crafted to foster reading, writing, speaking, mathematics, problem solving, critical thinking, and reflective practice across all subjects and grades. Our PGEs which are explicitly built from the GSEs and Applied Learning Standards form the basis for a series of common tasks in each subject area that address subject specific content knowledge while simultaneously requiring applications of knowledge that are common expectations for all students.
